play the built-in sounds

Shift + JAMMI: one sound across the keys, like an instrument. Shift + a white key picks which (1–14 of the bank). Shift + CUBBI: a kit, every white key its own sound. Press JAMMI / CUBBI again for the next bank (a–e).

loop on the tape

LOOP starts recording, play something, LOOP again sets the length and keeps recording on top, LOOP once more stops. PLAY pauses. Hold PLAY + LOOP on an empty tape and recording waits for your first note; hold both 2 s to erase the tape.

add another sound on top

While the tape plays, pick a different sound (shift + key, or switch JAMMI / CUBBI) and press LOOP to overdub. Shift + PLAY / LOOP sets how much older layers fade each time round. The TAPE knob changes the tape's speed (backwards left of centre); stopped, it scrubs.

effects before or after the tape

Shift + FX PRE: the MAGIC knob's reverb, delay, lo-fi and filter are recorded onto the tape. Shift + FX POST: the tape stays dry and the effects are applied on playback, so you can change them later.

record your own sound

Turn on mic / line in (headphones!) or wave → tape. Shift + MIC / LINE / RESAMPLE picks the source. Flip the MODE switch up, hold the star key to record, let go: it plays across the keys. To keep it: switch down, shift + SAVE, pick a slot (or PLAY for the tape), press the star key.

sample your WAVE loop

Make a loop in WAVE and press play. Switch to TAPE, turn on wave → tape: the WAVE loop keeps running into TAPE's line input. Record it as a sound (above), or straight onto the tape with LOOP.

Sound settings (speed, start, end, envelope, level, pan) are remembered per slot. Sounds you save, copy, erase or load are kept in this browser, like an SD card. Banks d and e start empty.

Tap loop, play some keys (each key you let go of becomes a step, rest adds a gap), tap loop again, then play. While the loop plays, recording drops notes onto the step under the playhead. Or click steps to place the last note you played (click again to clear, or right-click); drag a step up/down to change its note.

  • Press a knob to flip between its two pages (the dots under it show which). Shift + press resets that page.
  • Shift: with the mode switch down, hold the star key, tap it to latch, or hold your computer's Shift key.
  • Shift + white keys recall sounds 1–14; key 15 is the default sound.
  • Shift + black keys: « » octave, gate 10 / 50 / 100%, pitch and filter LFO on/off, and erase / copy / save. For those three: press it, pick a slot, then press the star key to confirm.
  • Loop: tap LOOP to record, play notes (released keys become steps), tap LOOP again, then PLAY. While it plays, recording replaces the step under the playhead. Hold LOOP to delete the last step; hold PLAY + LOOP to clear.
  • Mode switch up: the star key adds a rest while recording, or mutes the loop while held.

About Chompfe

Chompfe runs the engines of the open-source CHOMPI WAVE and TAPE 2.0 firmware by CHOMPI Club (now part of Chase Bliss), compiled to WebAssembly. WAVE's engine (voices, wavetable oscillator, DJ filter, LFOs, delay, reverb, compressor, loop sequencer) and its seven factory wavetables, and TAPE's sampler, tape looper, effects and factory sounds, come from that release. The controls, step grid, display and controller support are new.

Chompfe is an independent project and is not affiliated with or endorsed by CHOMPI Club or Chase Bliss. CHOMPI is a trademark of CHOMPI Club.

Also built on DaisySP and libDaisy (Electrosmith, MIT), coreJSON (FreeRTOS / Amazon, MIT) and DSP by Émilie Gillet / Mutable Instruments (MIT).
